Any Dieter Will Know The Definition Of Carbohydrates … Good and Bad

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Christain Cullen Any dieter will know the definition of carbohydrates. Several diets on the market have become famous by restricting carbohydrates. However, most do not realize that not all carbohydrates are bad. Although cutting carbs will help you lose weight, you have to consume carbohydrates to maintain a balanced diet. First, it is important to understand the terminology in detail. Carbs come from several sources such as vegetables, fruits, and breads. Carbs also come in several forms such as sugar, fiber, and starch. Basically, once in the digestive system, carbohydrates are broken down into sugars, or glucose, so that they can be absorbed into the blood stream to provide energy. If there are not enough carbs in the system, the dieter will feel fatigued. Certain carbohydrates can be nutritious. Sources such as fruits will also contain vitamins, fiber, and folates. Vegetable sources also contain those vitamins and fiber, as well as much need minerals. Fiber, protein, and vitamin B can be found in whole grains. For example, legumes contain protein, iron, and potassium. In contrast to these good carbs, bad carbs will be detrimental to your health. Junk foods such as cookies, chips, and soft drinks contain mostly carbs from sugar or flour. These carbs have been refined and have been linked to dangerous conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. These are the carbs that should be restricted from the diet since they have no nutritional value but are high in calories. Since there is no fiber in these carbs, you will feel hungry as soon as they are burned off; therefore, you have no nutrients but a lot of weight gain from these bad carbs. Instead of eating refined sugars and grains, you should opt for whole grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables that have their fiber and vitamins intact. To keep a balanced diet, eliminate only the bad carbs that are the likely culprits of the expanding waistline. Carbs can be defined as simple or complex, rather than good and bad. Simple carbs, such as sugars, are broken down easily and contribute to weight gain. Foods that contain simple carbs should be restricted. On the other hand, complex carbs take more work from the body to break down, so they contribute to weight loss. According to health professionals, you should keep 55 to 65 percent of your calories from these complex carbs in fruits and vegetables. Of course, just eating more fruits and vegetables wont do the whole trick. You still have to eliminate fatty foods such as heavy sauces, butter, and mayonnaise. If you use these condiments on your fruits and vegetables, you ruin the whole dieting effort. Although the food pyramid published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture says to eat as much as 11 servings of grains, many dieticians suggest that that number should be much lower if not eliminated totally. Recently, a poll revealed that 81 percent of people who responded were restricting their carbohydrates. Offering a conflicting point of view, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association believe that the number of carbs rather the type of carbs is more important in weight lose. However, each food creates a different glycemic reaction in the body. With all this confusion in opinions, it makes it difficult to decide what to do. Most dieticians agree that you do not need to totally eliminate carbs from the diet, but they should be kept in moderation. The carbs that are included should come from complex, or good, carbs, instead of simple, or bad, carbs. In this manner, the energy levels will stay normal while the weight loss will be optimized. Of course, most of us are used to heading for a snack packed with bad carbs for an energy boost, so breaking that habit could be hard at first. Once you get used to the idea, you will probably start enjoying the new healthy foods without even missing the candy bars and chips. Before Going After that 4.5 Interest Rate, do some Homework on Internet Banks

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Pete Glocker One day you might be at work or at home surfing the Internet and run into an advertisement stating that a particular bank offers a 4.8 annual percentage rate for their savings accounts. You may be thinking to yourself, wow that percentage rate is much higher than my 0.35 percentage rate at my local bank. Better yet, this bank does not require a minimum deposit or length of time like many conventional bank CDs. Is this too good to be true? There has to be a catch! With a little bit of research you are able to confirm the information in the ad, but the offer is from an Internet Bank. Should I put my money into a bank that I cannot touch, and see every day as I go past driving to work? Welcome to the wave of new ways to bank; Internet Banking. Why do online banks offer higher than regular bank establishments? According to an article published in the March 17, 2006 online edition of The Baltimore Sun, online bank rates can offer higher rates because they do not have the overhead of brick-and-mortar branches. They do not have the expense of purchasing property and constructing a building. For the computer savvy consumer, these great banking services are a mouse click or two away and available 24 hours a day. Comparisons of these banking services are at your fingertips. With all the different Internet schemes going on in this day in age, there are very legitimate reasons why people are scared or even paranoid to deal with their finances online. Phishing is one scheme that has made people very wary. In a typical phishing case, you will receive an e-mail that appears to come from a reputable company that you recognize and do business with, such as your financial institution. In the e-mail, phrases such as (immediate attention required) or (please contact immediately about your account) among many others will appear. The e-mail will then have a link directing you to a phony website where they can take all your private information. Then we all know what happens from there. This is why people hesitate to handle their finances on the Internet. So how can I make sure any bank (including an Internet Bank) is legitimate? Make sure the bank is FDIC insured. According to the official site, www.fdic.gov, there are four major tips to find out if the bank is legit or not. Confirm that an online bank is legitimate and that your deposits are insured. Read key information about the bank posted on the website. o Most online banks have an about us section that will describe their institution. o You may find the official name, the address of the bank headquarters and if they FDIC insured. Protect yourself from fraudulent websites. o Watch out for sites trying to copycat online bank sites in intent of gathering your information. o Always make sure you type the web address correctly. Verify the banks insurance status. o Look for the familiar FDIC logo or the words Member FDIC or FDIC Insured on the web site, but beware that some bogus bank sites that phish for your account information will put a fake FDIC logo on their site. o Go to the FDIC search engine and check to see if the bank is insured by the FDIC at http://www2.fdic.gov/idasp/main.asp?formname=inst As of this month, according Bankrate.com, HSBC was offering a 4.7 introductory rate. ING DIRECT was offering a 3.93 introductory rate. Almost all of the online banks were in the threes and fours. So as you can see there is a great opportunity to save quite a bit of cash. So, why not put your money to work for you? But make sure when you are considering Internet banking, do your homework first. Copyright 2006 Debt Management Credit Counseling Corp. Choosing the Right Trade Shows

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Ron Adler Companies that are consistently evaluating their place in the market, their target customers, their operating budgets, and how to stand out from the noise are those that are most successful. Your company’s involvement in trade shows should follow those same guidelines. Do Your Research Many companies fall into the “same old routine” trap when it comes to trade shows. If someone asks you why you do a particular show each year and your response is, “We’ve just always done it”, you might need to re-evaluate things! It may very well be the right show to attend, but your reasons for exhibiting should be concrete and the results quantifiable. If you haven’t done so in a while, take a fresh look at the shows that you do each year. Do they still hit your target? Are they still financially feasible? Do we continue to see tangible results after the show is done? If the answers to any of those questions is “no”, you need to re-think your involvement there. New trade shows, conferences, and industry organizations are being added annually. Take some time to do some research to determine if there are other shows out there that hit your target. And when you find them, don’t be afraid to call some of the exhibitors from the previous year and ask them about the results of their involvement. Once you have determined a list of potential shows, give them a final litmus testask yourself: Does this show put us in front of our target audience? Does this show put us in front of decision makers? Is there any way for us to stand out from our competitors at this event? Is this show affordable when we include space, marketing, our display, travel, etc.? If they pass the test, you’re on your way to determining the best shows for you to do! Ron Adler has been working in the exhibit industry with Adler Display (http://www.adlerdisplay.com) for over 30 years. Ron has designed and created some of the most unique and creative displays in the mid-Atlantic region including several Visitor Centers in Maryland as well as dozens of exhibits for museums and hospitals throughout the United States. 10 Weight Loss Tips

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Naveenkumar Rastogi 1. Burn more calories than you consume. If this makes you go: “D-uuuh!!”, snap out of it and consider that this elementary aspect of dieting excapes countless clueless — and doomed — dieters. Tabloids may claim to have the “miracle foods” that’ll allow you to eat like a pig and have the pounds melt off, but it’s a load. 2. Establish your base metabolism, and set a target calorie goal approx. 500 calories below it. I wrote an article dedicated to establishing your metabolism earlier, so look it up in the article archive if you need a refresher. 3. Keep an honest log. Make estimates of how many calories you stuff yourself with every meal and tally up the total to make sure you stay within your target calorie goal. Convenient “mistakes,” under-estimates and forgetfulness allows you to eat more now, but you’re defeating the whole point of dieting. 4. Actively choose good sources of fat. This may sound like stupid advice — shouldn’t you AVOID fat when dieting? Well, yes and no. You have to keep consuming some fat, just not going overboard. Avoid butter, bacon, whole milk, coconuts and such like the plague. Instead, make use of olive oil (virgin) and fatty fish. Peanut butter is an interesting topic. I used to put it in the same category as the “bad” fats. It belongs there, packing saturated fat as well as artery-clogging trans fatty acids. However, based on highly unscientific testimonies by others as well as personal experience, it seems like a handful of peanuts once in a while when dieting can do wonders in keeping energy levels up while not wreaking havoc with your overall diet. Strange and illogical? You betcha. But it just so happens to work anyway, kind of like bumblebees flying though they technically shouldn’t be able to. 5. Eat small but frequent meals throughout the day. You’ve heard it a million times, I’m sure, but facts remain: In order to keep an even level of blood sugar, you have to eat small, balanced meals. 6. Don’t go wimpy on the weight training. When you diet, you’re in the danger zone for losing muscle mass most of the time. To avoid this, keeping pumping iron, and be diligent about it! 7. Avoid alcohol. Given that barbeque-season is upon us, this can be tough when your friends bring out the ice-cold brewskis. The solution is simple: Only associate with other bodybuilders, so you at least won’t be the lone dweeb sipping a diet soda! For those of you who have the ridiculous idea that your life should not revolve around bodybuilding: Snap out of it. 8. Do cardio in moderation. Doing 45 mins on the stairmaster every day is a great way to get the pounds off quicker. 2 hours is not so great, since you’re bound to start losing muscle mass. When and how much is individual (and depending on what you’ve had to eat earlier in the day) but avoid cardio sessions in excess of 1 hour. If you need the punishment do one session in the morning and one in the evening. Also remember to stay in the 65%-70% heart rate zone for optimal fat burn. 9. Schedule “cheating” days to stay sane. Dieting is no fun. No matter how gung-ho and motivated you are when you start out, you’ll have days when everything is darkness and the world is out to get you. Make sure to get a treat once a week on a set day (Saturday is good) as it gives you something to look forward to. A juicy burger is fatty and calorie-dense, but if you prepare by doing extra cardio for three days in advance you’ll come in right on target for the week. 10. Don’t be afraid of soy. I used to avoid fake-meat products, but having been married to a vegetarian for 3+ years I’ve tried soy hot dogs, burgers, chicken patties, even riblets that taste just like the real thing. And here’s the kicker: Soy products is mostly protein! Granted, soy protein is not the highest quality out there, but if you drink a glass of milk or have some other high-quality protein source with it you can bump up the overall quality in a hurry. Besides, soy has a number of great health benefits when eaten in moderation and contains very little fat. Admiring Wild Flowers

Friday, September 21st, 2007

By Jonathon Hardcastle Walking with my family close to nature during late Sunday times has been a practice that I definitely enjoyed while I was a kid. Especially, if these long walks took place during spring time, I became extremely excited since I was able to admire all those wild flowers that attracted my attention and collect as many as I wanted for my bedroom’s vase. As during the past few years I’ve read about, and have seen more interest in wildflowers, I figured it was about time to jump in and add my two cents. Planting wild flowers in your backyard is not as an easy process as you might imagine. Just because the flowers you select to plant belong to the “wild” type that does not mean that they are able to survive without any attention or be sprayed with harmful pesticides. First of all, the one interested in exploring the wild flowers business has to understand what kind of neighborhood wildflowers would be appropriate for the specific situation he or she lives in. It is true that wild flowers tend to prefer wide open spaces with at least 8 hours of sunshine each day. It is also true, they are sun worshipers. They also like the soil to be rich in nutrients and well drained. What wild flowers do not like is the hard packed soil and also being watered for long periods of time. If you garden tends to be frequently wet, wildflowers might not be the best choice for your outdoor surroundings. But, wildflowers can be used for weed control and with a great deal of success. It is better though if you have to give wildflowers a start or the weeds will keep the area free from your original goal of a beautiful wildflower garden. Since both love the sun, weeds and wildflowers try both to reach the surface of the ground so as to gain as much sunlight as possible. Neither will grow well without adequate sunlight. Using this information to your advantage and you can end up with a beautiful bed of wildflowers that requires little maintenance. The Wild Flower Preservation Society, whose headquarters are in Washington, D.C., makes the following recommendation to wild flower fans, “Do not pick or dig up wild flowers in quantity unless they are abundant or weedy. Wild flowers that are not abundant should be picked or dug up very sparingly.” If the years I used to pick up wild flowers have long passed, perhaps it is time to grow some of my own in my back yard and share them with the people I care about. If you belong to the same group, there is always a good possibility we will meet in one of those flower markets, someday down the road. Marketing To Healthcare Industry: Selling Pharma Products To Doctor

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Alexander Gordon Marketing healthcare products to physicians requires tact and skill. Trust is very important, since physicians are always on the lookout for reliable sources of information on healthcare products. Marketing healthcare products also needs some basic knowledge of clinical evidence, as well as a good sales pitch. Since many representatives of the pharmacy industry to endorse products approach doctors, you need to be able to convince them about the efficacy of your products. If the sales pitch is overdone, doctors may get annoyed and refuse to listen to you. Effective Tips for Marketing Healthcare Products: Here are some ways to convince doctors about the efficacy of your healthcare products. 1) Tone down the sales pitch and provide authentic information. Give as much scientific data and information on clinical trials as you can. 2) Apart from face to face interaction, offer information through the Internet, email, mobile phones, print media and television and radio broadcasts. 3) E-detailing is another method of selling healthcare products to physicians. It involves electronic communication between physicians and sales representatives. 4) Offering online information is another way to market to the healthcare industry. Many doctors use online resources to keep track of the latest developments in the field. 5) Some healthcare companies also organize fairs that let physicians meet patients. This is a good chance for the pharma industry to market itself. 6) The Epocrates mobile service provides doctors instant answers to their healthcare related queries. Alerts are sent to physicians when a response to the query is available. How to Market Healthcare Industry Online: Online marketing is the latest in the marketing strategies of the healthcare products related industry. Your website must provide the latest, authentic information when marketing to healthcare professionals. Here are some points to keep in mind when selling to physicians online. 1) Combine the sales pitch with facts when presenting your products online. 2) Team with vendors who are trusted by doctors. 3) Market your products on websites that are trusted by doctors. 4) The website should be well maintained and offer the latest information on clinical trials and anything else of interest to doctors. Physicians are always on the lookout for credible information on the latest healthcare products. You should do your research well when presenting your products to doctors, since they are critical about overt sales pitch and little information. In order to market your products, you need to convince doctors about the quality of the products. Use the latest marketing tools like Internet, mobile devices and telephonic marketing in order to sell healthcare products to physicians. You can approach a business consultant for advice if you need to know more about marketing healthcare products to doctors, as well as to the public. Solving Problems with Non-Violent Confrontation

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By Jean Fisher This is the story of a busy family, maybe a lot like yours. They are a happy family, but every once in a while they experience moments of conflict. Hey everybody, the coach passed out the swim meet schedule today, Shane was out of breath as he ran toward the car, his hair still wet from practice. Get in the car. Well look at your schedule when we get home. Sarah has her dance recital announcement too, we can write everything down on the calendar. Mom smiled at her talented children in the rearview mirror as she drove toward home. Here let me see your schedule, Sarah snatched the paper out of Shanes hand in a typical little-sister fashion. Oh, no! Mom! Shane has a swim meet on the day of my recital. At the same time! That is a problem, isnt it? Give that back. Let me see. Shane snatched the paper back out of Sarahs hands (in a typical big-brother fashion). Which day? Here. Sarah pointed. Oh no! Mom! That is the match with Victors team. Im going to beat him this year, I just know it! You and Dad have to be there to see it! Hmmm, Im not sure how we are going to solve this problem, but I do know that we have to wait until we get home. A moving vehicle is not a good place for arguing. Mom shot her stern look at the two scowling children. Each child wants both parents at his or her special event. This is an example of conflict over limited resources. Discuss Feelings Back home, Dad joined Mom and the kids for a serious discussion. First of all, Mom and I want you to know that we understand how upset you both of you are. Of course, you want your parents to experience your moments of glory with you. But, you also need to understand that this is a bad situation for us big folks, too. It would break our hearts to ever have one of you believe that we thought the others activities were more important than yours. Listen to the other persons point of view But Dad, Shane has 10 swim meets this season. Dance class only holds one or two recitals a year! That should make my event more important. I know what you are saying is true, Sarah, said Shane. But, this is a special meet. Victor has beaten me every year, and at practice, my times have been so great that I just know I will win this year. Your dancing isnt a race or anything. Nobody wins any ribbons or trophies. He used his most reasonable voice and glanced out of the corner of his eye hoping his parents had noticed. Mom did notice and hid her smile at his veiled attempt at manipulating things in his favor. She then turned a patient face toward Sarah who had sprouted some tears (a not-so-veiled attempt of manipulation). Yes, Sarah, we know that you are unhappy, but we need clear heads not emotions if we are going to find a solution to this problem. Understand that people dont always agree on everything But its not fair! He has nine other meets you can both watch. I only have the one dance! Sarah, Shane feels just as strongly about this meet as you do about your recital, Dad said. You dont have to understand why he feels that way, you just have to accept the fact that he does. Look for creative solutions Brainstorm time, Mom declared. Put on your thinking hats, we need some ideas here. I do have an idea, Shane announced. Sarah will have a dress rehearsal for the dance, right? Yes, thats right. Well then, you and Dad could go to the dress rehearsal and then my meet and see them both. Thats a very creative solution, Shane, said Mom as she put her arm around a fuming Sarah, but I dont think it is the answer to our problem. A dress rehearsal really isnt the same as the performance itself Thanks, Mom, Sarah lost some of her stiffness and started thinking, too. We could film them for everyone to watch. Another fantastic idea, but since we only have one camera we are back to the same dilemma, Dad said. Who gets filmed and who doesnt. Oh, yeah. Everyone was quiet, thinking. Shane twiddled his thumbs. Dad broke the silence by joking, Hey, Shane wasnt that Science project you did last year on cloning? It is the only way I can see how one person can be in two places at the same time. Two places at the same timehmmm. Shane stared hard at his revolving thumbs as an idea started forming in his mind. Soon everyone was watching those thumbs go round and round, first one way and then the other. No, he said, not at the same time, but one and then the other. You mean a compromise, said Mom following his thoughts. Thats it! Sarah jumped into the conversation excitedly. Each of you could go to one of the events and then halfway through switch places. Weigh possible outcomes Sounds like a good idea to me, Dad smiled at his children. You get equal amounts of Mom and Dad without cutting us into two. There is something you need to consider first, he said more seriously, each of us will miss part of each event. I might or might not get to see Shane beat Victor. Mom might or might not get to see Sarahs perfect pirouette. Yeah, we know, Shane and Sarah said at the same time and grinned at each other. Finalize the decision Okay then, Ill take Shane to his swim meet and then end up at Sarahs dance, Dad said. That way I can gallantly present the Prima Donna with her flowers after the show. Youre getting me flowers? Sarah flung herself into her fathers arms. Perfect, that leaves me with Mom for the traditional after-meet ice cream, Shane declared. Ill not only be the fastest swimmer, Ill also be the guy with the prettiest mother. Thanks, said Mom, and yes, Ill let you get two scoops of ice cream. Following the above steps when solving problems through confrontation gives the proper respect to everyones point of view and increases the likelihood of reaching a win/win solution. I hope it works as well for your family as it did for Shane and Sarahs family. Jean Fisher is a former elementary school teacher. How to Lose Weight On A Gluten Free Diet

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Gina Gardiner Many celiacs lose weight before they are diagnosed; indeed it is often one of the reasons people go to their doctors in the first place. Once on a gluten-free diet the symptoms disappear, and as a result of better absorption or simply eating more, some people gain too much weight. Losing weight should be based on eating sensibly rather than lurching from one diet to another. Be wary of low carbohydrate diets, as high protein diets can cause acidosis, which in turn can lead to calcium being lost from the bones. You should always check the ingredients of any low calorie / low fat / low carbohydrate products as they may use ingredients containing gluten to thicken or stabilize the product. These are often wheat based. Moderation is the key. Dont deprive yourself but be honest with yourself. Snacking and raiding the fridge can add huge amounts of empty calories. Consider the relationship you have with food if you are using it to compensate for feeling unhappy it is better to deal with the underlying problem rather than use food. You end up with both the unhappiness and a weight problem. It is quite useful to keep a food diary for a week before attempting to change your diet. ( This refers to weight loss only, you must stick to your gluten-free diet at all times.) Look for empty calories, hidden fats and sugar. How much alcohol are you drinking? Be absolutely honest. Cut down on convenience foods as they are usually high in fat, sugar and salt. The best way to lose weight is to: Eat regular meals, particularly breakfast. Consider your portion control, and use a smaller plate. Dont feel you have to eat everything on your plate. Always stop eating when you are full! Eat lots of fruit and vegetables at least 5 portions a day, Fill up on vegetables - if it is green and leafy or red you can eat as much as you like Eat potatoes, yams, sweet potatoes and parsnips in moderation The way you cook food is important - Remember frying, roasting or putting loads of butter on vegetables adds lots of fat and calories - beware Cut out the snacks - they are often very high in fat and or sugar Be sensible with carbohydrates chose wholemeal rather than white bread, rice and pasta as it takes more calories for the body to digest, you feel full for longer and they have a higher level of vitamins and minerals. Eat them in moderation Trim fat off meat and dont eat the skin of fish or poultry there is a high concentration of fat just under the skin Beware hidden calories in drinks / snacks a single tin of non- diet fizzy drink contains the equivalent of 7 teaspoonsfull of sugar Crisps / biscuits / cakes / chocolate / sweets should be a treat they are laden with fat, salt and sugar Alcohol is high in calories; approximately 80 calories for a small glass of wine. (1 unit). Cut your intake of salt sodium can increase blood pressure. Eating and weight are like the see-saw at the park. One end represents the calories you take in what you eat. The other end is the calories you use in your daily activities including exercise. If you eat more calories than you use you will put on weight. The seesaw will go up as will your weight. If you eat fewer calories than you use you will lose weight. The seesaw will go down as will your weight. It is vital that you follow a sensible balanced diet when you are trying to lose weight, ensuring you get enough vitamins and minerals if you want to remain healthy. Drink plenty of water it will purify the system and help to make you feel full. Gina Gardiner author of “Live Well Eat Well With Celiac Disease” writes from first hand experience of being a celiac. Los Angeles Real Estate Lawyers

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Damian Sofsian A wide body of federal statutes and state statutory and common law regulates real estate transactions in Los Angeles. Many sellers generally appoint a real estate broker to find a suitable buyer for their property. The broker and the seller sign an agreement called a listing agreement. Generally, real estate transactions are supported by a mortgage. Los Angeles real estate lawyers tackle various legal issues that involve real estate law. Usually, real property denotes land and it can be divided in to three main categories such as freehold estates, nonfreehold estates, and concurrent estates. Other divisions of real property include future interests, specialty estates, and incorporeal interests. Lawyers can help draft or revise the sales contract to protect the buyer’s rights. The lawyers can also assess the title evidence or the title insurance commitment. They can also examine the closing documents to make sure that all the details have been included in the documents keeping their client’s best interest in mind. Many established real estate agencies in Los Angeles have their own lawyers whom they refer to, for all their real estate transactions. These lawyers review any offers the agency makes or receives, to ensure that the agency’s rights are protected. Many title insurance companies and mortgage lenders choose to deal with people who have a lawyer, to ensure that the title is good and devoid of any complication. Generally, legal fees are higher for a buyer than a seller as buying involves more legal issues than selling. In Los Angeles, many real estate lawyers charge a flat fee for certain legal services. However, some of them charge their clients on an hourly basis. Before hiring a lawyer charging on an hourly basis, it is advisable to get an estimate of the final cost. Typically, most lawyers will charge their clients for their time and services even if the deal is not closed.
