Marketing Tip - Avoid Direct Competition

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Glenn Harrington Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola have been engaged in direct competition for over 100 years, which is about 99 years too long. Originally marketed as health tonics, the two products are very similar, cost about the same, cater to the same market, and have never established any meaningful product differentiation. Such protracted, intense competition would be very, very costly to most businesses in most industries. Theres a lesson in it for all of us, though. Prosper in Peace Direct competition is an unnecessarily difficult way to do business. The level of difficulty relates to the maturity of the market and the innovative capacity of the competitors. Yet, all markets mature and its better to prosper in peace than to fight and starve. Fill a Niche To enjoy a more comfortable place in a competitive market, it is wise to identify and satisfy an under-served niche through differentiation from competitors. This way, you strive not to dominate the game but to dominate one particular aspect of the game your own. Cheap Like Cott Even if your product was a knock-off of Coke or Pepsi, you could claim market share by selling it at a lower price. This way, you could attract the most price-conscious segment of the market through price-based positioning and avoid the Coke-Pepsi fight. This is how Cott has prospered in the cola market. Different Like Jones An alternative way to create a niche through differentiation is to create a strong brand image that attracts people to your product even if the product is essentially the same as everybody elses. The Jones Soda Company does this. Its clear-glass bottles labelled with black-and white photos and overtly modest writing are a hit with the market segment that likes quirky originality. Position for Profit The principles of avoiding direct competition extend well beyond the convenient examples of niche marketing in the soft drink business. Every enterprise has its competitors, but intelligent market positioning can make an enormous difference in how fun and how profitable life can be. At Harrington Newsletter, we enjoy helping businesses achieve profitable positioning and have helped to create effective brands. Contact us with your thoughts. Vertical Locks: The Faux Hawk

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Johneen Manning While the look may have been previously identified as a disturbing case of bed head, today the urban chic are calling it cool. The term faux hawk refers to a hairstyle in which a strip (or patch) of hair across the top of the head is longer and/or higher than the hair on the remainder of the head. In “Last Trends of Summer: The Fauxhawk” (Chicago Tribune, August 26, 2003), Whet Moser explains the preparation and cult-following of the style: “The name is, of course, a play on the mohawk style, which it resembles only in principle: The hair is noticeably longer on top than on the sides. But whereas a proper mohawk is completely shaved on the sides and drastically high in the middle… the fauxhawk simply requires hair that’s longer where the mohawk would be.” The Extreme Version: A mohawk, but instead of a “real” mohawk where you shave the sides of your head, you just glue up the middle part of your regular hair so that it is in the style of the mohawk. The definition of the faux hawk has evolved as it has been adopted by virtually all metrosexuals and other style-conscious modern men. More recently, women have embraced the faux hawk and elevated it to a whole new level. Although the look demands far more effort than it would seem at first glance, the hairstyle is not highly manicureda contradiction of styles, and is best achieved when it comes off as fortunately unkempt. Anyone can obtain this precariously coiffed ‘do: Men and women with shorter styles should crop the hair on the sides of their head considerably shorter than on top, taking a page from Mr. T and then spackling spikes haphazardly in place with plenty of gel, pomade, or wax. Women (or men for that matter) with longer hair can take advantage of an arsenal of product and pins to secure a slicked back look along the sides of their heads, crowned by a gloriously voluminous, texturized mass of waves. Warning: in some cases, hair extensions may be required in order to complete the anti-gravity style. This exaggerated version of the faux hawk - which has been especially popular among young female celebrities and on fashion runways - is an interesting ultra-modern synthesis of the eras that have heavily inspired the direction of this season’s fashions: The glamour of the 1950s pompadour fused with punk, bad-ass, big 1980s hair. Candles and Your Wedding, Babynaming or Other Ceremony

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Jennifer Cram The lighting of candles is a common element in many of the ceremonies and ritual we use to mark important times in our lives. They help set the mood, by creating the relevant ambience: romantic, mystical, reverent. And they can add many-layered symbolism. Light symbolises life in many cultures and we speak of the flame of life, the flame of love, and see in the flame symbolic suggestions of potential, of purity, of reverence, and of spiritual invocation. And a candlelit ceremony is always very romantic. However, for safety and other reasons, there are some rules that it would be prudent to follow: Even the slightest puff of wind can extinguish the flame or make it hard to light the candle, destroying the symbolism of any candle lighting. So, if your ceremony is being held outdoors encase the candles in a hurricane or in a glass or vase where the top of the flame is well below the rim, or use candles that come in a glass cylinder. Candles in votive holders are useless in this situation as the flame is above the rim. A candle in a glass cylinder has the added advantage of being stable and if left burning, safe.If using candles as decoration, be careful about where you place them. If you line a path with candles in hurricanes, jars or cylinders, make sure that it is wide. Ive seen candles placed in spaces in the railing of a rotunda to good effect. In that situation the candles are virtually in recesses so are less likely to be brushed against. While candlelight is romantic it is hard to read by. Ensure there is enough light so that anyone who has to read can actually see what they are reading, and that there is enough light on the signing table for people to see what they are signing.Candles with decorations round the base should be protected so that when they burn down they wont set fire to the decorations. This is especially important if the decoration is paper or dried flowers. If anyone is going to be carrying candles, make sure that they:Have plenty of roomUnderstand that they must not wave their arms aroundDo not have to hold the candle for too longKnow where to put the candle afterwards, and, if necessary how to safely extinguish the candle before they put it downChoose your type of candle carefully. Beeswax candles burn at a much higher temperature than stearin candles so should be avoided because hot melted beeswax will cause a bad burn if it splashes. The good news is that most candles you buy in home stores and supermarkets are stearin candles. If youre having the ceremony inside consider whether anyone present is chemical-sensitive. Candles produce smoke. Though there is unlikely to be a problem if only one candle is used, stearin candles are full of chemicals, and this can cause some discomfort to some people. In particular, avoid pre-perfumed candles as they are most likely to irritate anyone with allergies. An ordinary cigarette lighter or matches left on the table can pose a hazard too they are very attractive to small children. While either will work well to light an unprotected candle, assuming there is no wind, one of the newer gas lighters designed especially for lighting candles in holders is a much more efficient and safer option.Be careful how you extinguish candles. Large, thick candles form a pool of molten wax as they burn, and blowing the candle out can blow the hot wax onto people nearby, causing a nasty burn. Be particularly careful with children whose eyes are likely to be on a similar level to a candle on a table. A snuffer is the safest method of extinguishing your candles. If you are having your ceremony in a park or outdoors, make sure to keep an eye on fire-bans. In the summer it may be illegal to have open flames. If you are having your ceremony in a restaurant or other venue, check that candles are allowed, and what the limit in candle numbers is before the sprinklers are triggered. Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #22

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Tami Close Have you had an amazing transformation of self? Are you learning that your power lies in your thoughts? Remember whatever you think about you manifest so if youve manifested frustration, what have your thoughts been about? Turn your attention on what you do want and hold that attention and you will begin to vibrate there. If you desire to feel vibrant and healthy and rid yourself of the excess weight, then focus on those things that are going to give you the outcome that you want. Surround yourself with the conditions and the people which will help you move towards your goal. If you find yourself spending time with people who arent health conscious and you end up slipping into what you dont want, then what is the simple answer? What I have found is that until you can be strong enough in your own sense of who you are, its important that you not be around people who dont subscribe to a healthy lifestyleor at least limit your exposure. Working on yourself with the daily work will be the key factor in helping you gain your power back so that you can be around people and not be affected by what they eat. In addition, you wont be affected by their negative energy because youre going to be vibrating at such a higher level. Doing the daily work is crucial to your success to keep your thoughts vibrating at a higher level and sustaining that positive energy. You owe it to yourself to be empowered so that you take responsibility for your own health and well-being. Have you ever said to yourself, That person makes me so mad! When you do this, you are giving your power to that person and thus are feeling the effects of that negative emotion in every part of your body. In some ways you keep telling yourself that youll wait until all the mean people leave the earth, then youll have peace. Guess what? It doesnt work that way. Peace comes with practice in loving yourself enough then youre not bothered by what people do or say. Its simple but it does take daily practice because struggle has been our middle name. Ready to change your middle name? Okay, Ill admit that when Im around negative people, I will revert to seven year old Tami who secretly sticks her tongue out, makes faces at them or desperately wants to moon them. Oh, that inner child that will get the best of me sometimes. I have to go sit in a corner and do some of my own daily work. Now, commit to the daily focus on you. Your power lies within the daily work. Spend time with you today, okay? Daily Focus RET/EFT Gratitude Exercise Eating nutritious food Laughing Meditation/prayer Affirmations Who is the most important person in the world? YOU! Put yourself first and watch everything that is wonderful flow to you, not away from you. You dont want to have to run after anything. Let it come to you. Let it flow, baby, flow! Saving Money with Online Dating

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Jeff Pesarcyk These days, it costs a great deal of money to maintain a presence on the dating scene. Bars and nightclubs routinely charge covers simply for admission, and everything inside will set you back quite a bit. You can find cheaper drinks at certain hours of the day, sure, but the odds of finding a romantic prospect between the hours of 3:00 and 6:00 PM are pretty slim, to say the least. More accurately, establishments will actually raise the price of drinks as the crowd grows; after all, what other options do the people have? By the time you factor in the various costs associated with simply going to a bar or club and buying drinks for yourself, let alone buying drinks for other people that pique your interest, its not unheard of to spend well over a hundred dollars in a single evening. All of that, and there is still no guarantee that your time, effort, or money will translate into romantic success. One of the key advantages of online dating versus traditional dating is that you dont have to spend any money in order to simply participate or to achieve success. Creating an online personal ad or profile requires very little time and effort, and only rarely will a company charge you for the actual hosting of your profile. If there is any fee associated with such a service, it is generally nominal. Simply having a profile available online is the best way to increase your odds of finding a romantic partner; just as you are searching online for potential matches, so too are others looking for somebody just like you. Browsing through available online personal ads is generally free, as well. Occasionally, websites will allow you to browse through the front pages of online personals but will require a paid membership in order to actually contact the person. Often, however, this cost is rolled into the price of personal ad hosting. Regardless of how the fee structure, if any, is structured, it still represents a significantly lower cost than a night on the town with high aspirations and uncertain results. Not even when you find a romantic prospect and actually connect with them are you required to spend money unnecessarily. A simple exchange of emails and telephone calls costs nothing, and by the time the relationship progresses to the point where the two of you go out, it is generally assumed that there is sufficient mutual interest to warrant such a decision. Because of this, a night out will not be a matter of throwing money around in hopes of finding romantic success; as there is already interest, any money spent will go towards fostering the development of a relationship. Furthermore, getting to know somebody online and by telephone before actually going out with them gives you the opportunity to explore interests and discover what the two of you have in common. Because of this, there is no testing the waters to see what the two of you can enjoy doing together. In all aspects, online dating is a more economically feasible option than traditional settings. http://www.online-dating-tips-guide.com - Provides advice and tips about online dating. Are Parents The Cause Of Teen Suicide?

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By JD Wilson What drives a teenager to commit suicide? Is a dysfunctional family the cause of teen suicide or is it the peer pressure, low self-esteem, stress, access to drugs, guns, or an unyielding desire to make the pain disappear. Teenage suicide has and is becoming a pandemic in our country and around the world. According to the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center, “teen suicide is the third leading cause of death among teenagers — almost 2,000 teens kill themselves each year.” It is estimated that “over 90% of teen suicide victims have a mental disorder, such as depression, and/or a history of alcohol or drug abuse.” Our youth has become entrenched in an ideology doled out by those who seek to control, persuade, and coerce our teenagers. At the same time, communication between parent and child has become, in most situations, non-existent. This leaves teenagers to fend for themselves in areas they are too immature to understand, or too eager to become engaged in activities which can lead them astray. There was a time when teens came directly home after school; were greeted by at least one parent; studied; had a family dinner, and off to bed. Today, the term latch-key kid has become the norm, rather than the exception. Teens arrive home late; often to an empty apartment or home. They engage in computer games, while eating junk food; and often do not see their parents until morning and only because they are late getting out of bed. Homework is secondary or non-existent. One can argue a two income household is necessary; but at what cost? Furthermore, if youve ever graced a public school environment, you would find teens lack even the rudimentary necessities of life; yet, cell phones are tucked in their worn out jeans and skirts. The music, movies, and educational system have let down our teenagers in the most rudimentary way. They lack guidance and care. Our child services, our family courts, and our caregivers have offered little to assert the importance of self-worth. Over the years, the make-up of the “family” has dramatically changed. A teenagers family could be his gang members who, on a daily basis, feed into the destruction of that teen. Morality has become pass, and they have become self-absorbed in an underworld of hatred and self-loathing. Have all teenagers talked or even thought about suicide? No. However, the statistics are still frightening. A teenager doesn’t suddenly choose to die unless something terribly wrong has pushed him/her over the edge. We cannot allow them to choose that endgame. Teenagers do become depressed, alone, angry, hopeless and helpless. As parents, as friends, as educators, as guardians of this precious commodity - we cannot allow them to succeed in what they think may be in their best interest. They must be given a reason to live, to love, to become needed and useful members of our society. As adults/parents, we must educate and interact with our youth in a positive, caring and thoughtful way to ensure they have the proper tools with which to grow and gain empowerment. To do less would without a doubt contribute to the cause of teen suicide, the ultimate tragedy. Need more free family information? Marketing for the Mystified

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Robin Pratt Imagine you are in the process of setting up your own business, the culmination of all that training, experience and investment but are not confident of knowing or being good at the best steps to success. Or, imagine that you are running your dream business but the dream is a bit tarnished and you just aren’t quite getting where you intended to be. So there you are mystified but imagine you knew all the answers to creating your success. And imagine you knew all the questions to get to these answers. It would be fabulous wouldn’t it? Your problems would just dissolve and all your greatest challenges become fun. You’re doing all the work so how do you access the rewards? Reality 1 - You know many more answers than you may believe that you do. Reality 2 - You have access to all the answers you will ever need. I spent many years in big company marketing. I gave that up and trained to be a business coach. When I qualified this meant starting a small business. The challenge I faced was that growing a business was much more difficult than I imagined, nothing like being in a big company. Let me explain Businesses start for many different reasons: a lifelong dream, a perceived opportunity or reaching a required level of skill and experience. So you have the skill and the desire to succeed but often not a lot of knowledge and experience in marketing and business development. The ironic part for me was that I thought I was a marketeer and I still found it challenging. This was because I wanted to focus on applying my new skills and knowledge to my new business. But the reality of a new business is that you have few customers and lots of time. This time has to be used for developing your business if you plan to succeed. I searched around for a way to make this easier but kept finding programmes that took me in a particular direction that wasn’t mine or gave direction that I felt didn’t suit my business and the way I wanted my business to grow. I want to share with you how I found a really good way to grow a business. I developed an interactive process that is based upon the coaching and mentoring principles of asking rather than telling. Seeking and developing rather than assumptions being made. *For example you may be a trainer - the traditional approach says advertise. But, you have a small budget so a low cost alternative will be better. You are really good at making presentations. They often cost very little and can generate great response. So what do you do? *You are a graphic designer and the competition is really strong - how do you get to stand out from all the other graphic designers? *You are a niche retailer - You have tried all sorts of promotions and advertising but you are stuck; business isn’t growing and you are short of ideas - how do you move forward? My approach acknowledges YOU are the expert on your own business. You are not an expert on marketing and business development but if you use this interactive process that grows and evolves with you as you gain experience and knowledge you will be successful. This interactive process works day by day, week by week to enable you to identify and focus on the activities that match you and your attributes and will provide your success. So here goes: 1) Use a coaching and mentoring approach that acknowledges what you have and matches you and your business to your best route forward. To do this you ask yourself questions - What do I want my business to look like? What resources have I - time and money? What do my customers look like and where are they? What have I done so far? What haven’t I yet done? What is my dream and what are my goals? 6months, 12 months, 2 years etc. What is the image of my business - does it match me, does it tell my customers who I am, what I do and what they will get? These are just a few questions but right them down and answer them. Then other questions will come out. So you are doing an audit of you and your business. It is different because you are part of the audit. At the end of the day you are a large part of your business. 2) Second I have developed SORD: * Strengths - list in detail all the things you are good at, experienced in, knowledgable about * Opportunities - list everyone and everything you know that can link you to opportunities * Realities - how much money and time and training etc do you really have -you need to know, you can only do what you really can do. * Development areas that are key to your future success. This is where you list and evaluate everything that may be necessary to learn or to have or the nice to knows that you can revisit in the future. 3) Analyse the key marketing and commercial skills and techniques that are key to the success of your business - not generic marketing. So you start with those you are most likely to succeed at not those you are told to use regardless of your level of skill and knowledge and confidence. You will need to look at what your competitors do, what other types of business do and what you are naturally good or bad at and what you already have knowledge and experience of. 4) Mix the marketing ingredients specifically appropriate to you and your business. You create a customised marketing plan. It is yours and it is unique to you. It is all the skills you focus on now. The things you know, can access and make sense for your business. When I started my coaching business I worked from a tiny budget but I had a lot of time so I networked, I did presentations, I worked on public relations - articles for local papers and radio stations, I did flyers for places and events where I knew my potential customers would go, I did an elevator speech BUT I did not sell me I only sold the benefits my clients would get. 99% of your customers are buying benefits for themselves. All your knowledge and skill and investment don’t count. The client asks ‘What’s in it for me?’ You sell if you answer that question well. 5) Action planning - real planning, real commitment and strict management and control of your activities. Action is everything in creating a business! Intentions don’t do it, great ideas don’t do it. Doing it does it! Keep doing the things that work, dump those that don’t 6) Review and improvement - what worked, what didn’t. What can be done better, what shall be dumped. Constantly hone and improve your commercial activities so performance improves and your results improve. And you keep doing it until you fulfil your goals and dreams. And then, guess what - you do it more because success is good and fun. This really does work; it has worked for me and for a lot of other people across a range of businesses. It is more subtle than standard marketing programmes. The key is that it looks in detail at you, what you can do and what you can’t. It also looks at what you are most likely to be successful at and focuses on these areas. Building a successful business is hard work but it can be a simple process. So just to think about your approach and start to ask some questions of your own so you find the best answers for you. Robin Pratt is a career marketeer who discovered the power of coaching and its ability to release human potential. Cell Phone Wet? Find Out How You Can Save It

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Asaf_Atiya]Asaf Atiya It can happen to anyone: You walk into the pool or sea with the cell phone in your pocket, wash it with your clothes, or just drop it into the sink or bathroom… But it doesn’t have to be the end of your mobile buddy. Follow these steps as quickly as possible, and you might be using it to tell your friends about the whole thing in a few days. Here’s what to do: Turn the phone off. Remove the Battery and SIM card. The quicker you do this, the better. Even if the phone isn’t salvaged, your SIM card might survive. As for the battery, it’s less likely to keep working. If the phone was in salty sea water, carefully rinse it with fresh water before drying.Dry it. First, use a towel to dry the phone. Then use toilet paper and an ear pick to reach the places a towel can’t. Let it Rest. If the inner circuits of the phone are wet, it can cause more harm to turn it on before they’re dry. Follow these drying guidelines: Let the phone dry for at least 3 days.Keep it uncovered in a warm, dry place.Don’t try drying it in the sun, the oven, the microwave or with any appliance that can possibly melt it.Try using any absorbing substance that will not harm the phone, such as Rice, Ungrounded salt or Silica packs that come with Vitamin packs, Clothes and Electronics. If the screen is still foggy after 3 days, wait a few days more. Try turning it on. If it seems dry and ready, re-attach the battery and SIM card and turn it on. If it doesn’t work, you can either attempt to dry it more or take it to the manufacturer. Note that it’s possible for them to know if the phone has been dropped in water due to special stickers that respond to water. Warranties, unlike insurance, don’t cover water damage. Even if it still doesn’t work, it might be possible to rescue important information that’s not on the SIM. Consult a technical representative from your company about your possibilities. Seasonal Depression - Got The Winter Blues

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Ryan Puusaari What is seasonal depression? Seasonal depression (SAD) is a form of depression that affects 6 out of every 100 people in North America. It is most common in young women in the northern states during late fall and winter. As with all forms of depression, if it goes untreated, it can take a terrible toll on a person’s life. While the causes of SAD are unknown at this time, it has been observed that a reduction of sunlight in the winter months seems to trigger it. There is no clear understanding as to why this is or how the sunlight interacts with the body to prevent or trigger SAD. It does appear that it runs in the family, so you should be aware of any history of it in your family. What are the symptoms? Most people will suffer from some or all of the following symptoms: * Depressed moods * Sudden loss of interest in things that make you happy * Feeling like you have no energy * A sense of worthlessness or hopelessness * Inability to concentrate In several cases, there have been reports of thoughts of suicide. While you may not experience all these symptoms, you should take them seriously. Have a conversation with your doctor about when you first noticed the symptoms, as they could also be other forms of depression. The conditions that bring on the depression are important and need to be known to differentiate SAD from other forms of depression. What are the causes? The causes of SAD are not known at this time. It is believed that the amount of sunlight you receive is key to SAD. It is not clear why sunlight is linked to it, but there are more recorded cases of SAD in areas of the world that have reduced sunlight due winter or cloudy skies. What is the treatment? Currently, the recommended treatment for SAD is bright light therapy. This treatment involves exposure to light that is brighter than normal home or office lights. It helps relieve the symptoms of SAD in about two thirds of all patients. The light source needs to be at least 10,000 lux and you should be exposed to it for about 30 minutes per day. Tanning beds do not work as a substitute for the proper bright light source and should be avoided. As with any treatment, there are some side effects but they are minimal and short term. They will include eyestrain and headaches and are relieved with removal of the light source. Idea Marketing

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Karen Lavender Though it is not the only thing, idea marketing is one of the most important things that govern the success of any business (be it a small home based business or a big business). Of course, the quality of your products/services will be the main thing driving the growth of your business. Idea marketing can be done in a number of ways. What your idea marketing techniques you apply will be dependent on the type of business you run and your idea marketing budget. Online idea marketing Online idea marketing is one of the cheapest ways of Idea marketing. By online idea marketing we mean publicity of your products and services on the internet. With millions of people logged on to the internet all the time, internet is also one of the best and most logical ways of Idea marketing. On top of that, Idea marketing on the internet is also lot easier than offline Idea marketing. There are a number of ways in which you can do Idea marketing on the internet. The first step, of course, is to set-up a website for your business. Again, based on what kind of business you are running, you might need a simple static website or a complex/ dynamic one. For most businesses simple websites will suffice. The dynamic ones are needed only if you are running an online business that needs a lot of security and other interactive features. Once you have setup your website, you can go for online idea marketing in a number of ways: 1. Ads on websites / search engines 2. Participation in online forums 3. Getting listed on web directories 4. Search engine optimization techniques 5. Pay per click and other/ similar marketing techniques. Warren and Karen have been involved in the internet for a number of years and run several websites. They are most interested in providing opportunities for people to connect with information relating to business, health and creativity. Check out their Idea Marketing blog for more information.
