By Michael Tummillo The more I read and listen to others who are wading the House Church pool, sadly, the more I see well-meaning Christians inadvertently lifting up the leaders of various “networks” within the movement. Once again, Dissension appears to be trying to rear its ugly head. Each House Church group and network seems to have their own philosophy with each placing greater emphasis on one thing or another. One places a strong emphasis on the Lord’s Supper while another stresses that any “layman” can start a church in their home. Another group emphasizes signs and wonders while another emphasizes the “Saturation Church” concept. Many groups are merely taking the “big church” format and reducing it to living room scale, while other groups are, unfortunately, becoming elitist and even divisive as they nurture an “Us against Them” mindset against the traditional, or “legacy” churches. As usual, it doesn’t take a Christian very long to revert back to the “holy place of meeting” mentality while giving lip service to the “We are the Church” mantra. But where actual House Church gatherings are concerned, like snowflakes, no two groups will ever be alike. OUR SURVEY SAYS… According to a 2006 survey on the movement, researcher/sociologist George Barna compiled the following breakdown of house churches in America today. Which describes YOUR House Church? The average length of a House Church gathering is 1-1/2 hours. Only 6% of House Churches meet for 3 hours or more. 29% meet on Wednesday, 25% Sunday. For most participants, House Church appears to function as an addendum to their Sunday attendance 60% always follow the same routine. 91% are little more than Bible Studies. A group’s average size: 15 people. 5 Children. One third (32%) have no children involved. 50% separate kids and adults; 19% have separate and combined; 22% always have kids and adults together. LEAD ME TO YOUR TAKER It must be the Adamic nature of man that causes people who confess that the literal presence of God Himself indwells their very being to act in a manner that is contrary to that declaration. We are no different than the elders of Israel who, although they had the prophet Samuel living among them, a man through whom God spoke, insisted upon having a king like all the other nations. Despite God’s warning that a king would TAKE their sons off to war, TAKE their daughters for his Kingdom work and TAKE their taxes, the elders persisted. King Saul was given to them, one of the worst kings ever. The rest is history. So, here we are, this mighty army-on-bivouac called The Church, endued with the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, still insisting that somebody “lead us” around spiritually. Now, when we gather, some may teach us, but that doesn’t make them our leaders. Others may prophecy, but the words they speak forth had better confirm what the REAL leader - Jesus - is already saying to us. Another who is gifted musically might lead us in songs of worship (Those of who cannot carry a note in a bucket say “let them!”). The common tendency, however, is to look to an individual HUMAN’s leadership rather than trusting the Holy Spirit to guide His family. Romans 8:14 tells us, “All who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” Led? Wasn’t Jesus “led” by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tested by the devil (Luke 4:1-2)? Does that mean our LEADER is the Holy Spirit? Yes, when the Spirit of God invades the soul of man, a new leader emerges, namely, God. Those who know Him will know His voice. What I’ve found is that far too few of us actually know Him. Leave it to mankind, sojourners and aliens, spiritual beings enduring this human experience, to try and get comfortable here. We send Moses up the mountain to hear from God because we’re scared spitless. We’ll even pay somebody to hear from God on our behalf - even making that his salaried job, complete with a title (pastor, reverend, father, etc.) - so he can report back to us at the next church service. Mankind, made in God’s image and intended to be the freest creature in the universe, actually WANTS to be led by someone else. It’s crazy! NOTE: The only thing God NEVER gave mankind dominion over was other people! REPEAT: The only thing God NEVER gave mankind dominion over was other people! Those humans whom we allow to take authority over our lives will take our freedoms - including our spiritual freedoms - if only because we surrender them, NOT always because they wrestled them from our grip. They’ll take all the power we give them. The word “religion” - according to Funk & Wagnall’s - actually means “a return to bondage.” Hmmm. Jesus came to set us FREE! GIVE ME A MAN! In 1 Samuel 17:10, we read about how Goliath shouted at the Israelites, “Give me a man that we may fight each other!” His taunting rang in their ears, causing paralyzing fear. Even today, many are taunted by that same demonic spirit that simply cannot bear to see Christian people submit directly to God, preferring that we submit to a man instead. The apostle Paul had to write a letter of correction to the House Churches that were meeting in the Greek city of Corinth. It seems that some who were coming into The Church - specifically, in this case, those who belonged to Chloe’s family - were beginning to take a little too much pride in their spiritual pedigrees and becoming a bit cliquish. They had opened the door to a Sectarian Spirit. According to 1 Corinthians 1:12, they were saying things like, “I am a follower of Paul,” and “I am a follower of Apollos,” and “I am a follower of Peter,” along with those who confessed, “I am a follower of Christ.” “I am a follower of Catholicism. I am a follower of the Presbyterians. I am a follower of the Baptists. I’m a follower of (name a preacher, any preacher).” Jesus said, “I will build MY Church, and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it.” He never told Peter to build his own network of churches. He said “feed MY lambs,” not “feed YOUR lambs.” Paul never referred to the churches he planted as “his” churches. Here we read how he pleaded with the Corinthian saints, “Christian brothers, I ask you with all my heart in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to agree among yourselves. Do not be divided into little groups. Think and act as if you all had the same mind.” In verse 13, Paul adds, “Has Christ been divided? Was Paul put on a cross to die for your sins? Were you baptized in the name of Paul? I am thankful to God that I baptized Crispus and Gaius only. No one can say that you were baptized in the name of Paul…Christ did not send me to baptize. He sent me to preach the Good News.” Good News? Yes, the Good News - the Gospel of the Kingdom that Jesus came to preach about (see Matthew 4;23; 9;35; 24:14; Mark 1:14) that is simply this: 1) There is a King. 2) He has a Kingdom. 3) He loves you and wants you in it with Him so that He can care for your needs. 4) He desires to build that Kingdom with you alongside, working WITH Him as He works THROUGH you. The Queen of Sheba heard about King Solomon and marveled at how he cared for his subjects. From the fine robes they wore, the food they ate, the wisdom the king possessed…he amazed her. “That was some kinda King!” When God cared for the wandering Children of Israel, for forty years their clothing never wore out, water came from rocks, manna and quail were provided to eat and they were provided shade by day and fire by night. Even their enemies were destroyed and those bitten by serpents were healed. “That was some kinda King!” Even King Jesus, when preaching to hungry crowds, provided food. He raised their dead loved ones and healed their sicknesses. “That was some kinda King!” Now, the same Spirit that raised Him from death and led Him in life desires to lead us. But we must submit to Him. We must decrease so that He can increase and shine through us, illuminating our worlds and telling them about the Good News of the Kingdom of God. They, too, once they experience Him, will declare, “That is some kinda King! The Spirit exalts Jesus, and abases the flesh. If our flesh is screaming out for human leadership, pridefully declaring that we are followers of so-n-so, and if our lives are not centered around Jesus, I question whether or not He is truly the Lord - “kyrios” in Greek, meaning “owner” - of our lives. If Jesus is not central to what your House Church is all about, question its reason for being. If you find yourself following any human being and NOT the Spirit of Christ, I have a Word from God for you: Repent! We must fight to keep dissension from entering in among us. Our 30,000 manmade denominations aren’t doing a very good job of that, it appears. We have been, despite our good intentions, the #1 cause of atheism on the planet. They will know we are Christians by our love for one another. So, let’s all decide to love one another. Jesus is Lord…or He’s not. Either we submit to Him alone as Lord of ALL, or He isn’t our Lord at all. By Eva Fry I am not talking about the abusive bully or the man with a character flaw, who possesses no compassion, is beyond feeling and has no conscience. I am talking about the frustrated man who yells at this family, makes great demands on them, seems always angry and frustrated. This unhappy man is often the product of stress. His actions are the reactions of trying to provide for his family, in an uncaring world that often demands more than he can give. He often feels that his efforts are not recognized and that there is no reward for doing his best. For a wife to live with this troubled man is very difficult. All she sees is the consequence of his unappreciated attempts to make it in the world. His frustrations and anger are often taken out on his family. Why? Because his home is the only place he can get away with it. The only place he can vent his feelings and try to get rid of some the pressure he feels. Home is the only place he hopes to be understood. For this man, an understanding wife is the best gift he can have. To be able to come home to a wife who loves him. Doesnt judge him. Accepts him even when hes unkind and allows him to vent his feelings, even when its unfair, is probably the kindest thing anyone can do for him. Some women are unable to do this and it’s understandable. The problem we have is, the frustrated man comes home from work wanting peace, a safe haven from the world and no new problems. He is up tight. His nerves are shot and little things will bug him, like seeing the kids bikes carelessly lying in the driveway. This makes him angry because it just adds to the pressure he already feels, so he yells at the kids. Or, he notices that his wife didnt do something he asked her to do. It doesnt matter that maybe she had a hard day too. He interprets this as her not caring for him, helping him, or understanding that he needs help. Exasperated he starts yelling at her too. He is at the end of his rope and believes those who should care are not considerate of him. She in turn thinks. How can he treat me that way? Why doesnt he understand what I have been through this day? Why doesnt he ever see all that I do? Why does he only see what I dont do? So she in turn gets angry back with him or punishes him in other ways. She turns herself away from him. She stops talking to him. Chooses to not do things for him, because he doesnt understand her. She feels sorry for herself and becomes depressed. Etc, Etc, Etc. There is no understanding on either side. The worst part is that when we feel abused or neglected we tend for forget the good parts of our mate. We only see the bad. We only see our partners flaws and mistakes. We tend to forget our own mistakes. We each want perfection from our mate when we are not perfect! To make an analogy: If your young son went to school and was made fun of, by the other kids, was misunderstood by the teacher, found school hard and didnt get the help he needed. He is really hurting. He comes home angry and wants to fight with his siblings, gets sent to his room, for being a brat. He feels that no one, at home, loves or understands him either and he just gets more angry and frustrated. We need to understand the cause of our loved ones actions. Every action has a cause! We very seldom take the time to fine the cause. To understand the cause and to do what we can to help eliminate or at lease understand the cause is what we should do. Instead we react to their actions, not realizing their actions are the result of a cause. We need to love them enough to understand them. To be an understanding wife, when her husband is acting out, is difficult because she tends to take his actions toward her as abuse. It is, but she fails to recognize the reasons for why he acts as he does. She needs to understand the cause. To allow him to vent when he needs to. She needs to understand what it like for a man out there in the world, The world of men working with men! Most men put great demands on each other. Most have little compassion for other men. Often, they gain great joy if they can put another man down. Even destroy him if they can. Teasing is one of the greatest joys men do to other men, usually in an unkind way. Many men have no consideration for another mans feelings. If a man can point out another mans flaw; it gives the abuser a sense of pride and makes him feel that he is better than he really is. Many men have large egos gained from stomping on other men. Most men do not build each other up, they tear each other down and are not always aware they are doing it. It is just tradition passed down from man to man. They do not give compliments, they try to embarrass and insult each other. They were often raised with unfeeling and unkind fathers or no father at all and grew up in a world of unkind men. They in turn, to survive, take on the characteristics of other flawed men because they believe this is how a man should act. They believe they must be strong. This is being masculine. This is being a man1 The other thing about a man, some women dont always understand, is how difficult it is to make a living today. There are enormous demands put on them to perform. The fear of failure or of being fired is a tremendous stress. The expectations put on men by themselves or their family members expectations, is breaking. To provide nice homes, nice cars and all the extras like music lessons etc is overwhelming to most men. To know that so much is expected of them and to know that they may not possess the abilities to live up to all those expectations is very hard on them. To be an understanding wife to this frustrated man is very difficult, but so important. To not take the actions of her husband toward her, personally, is extremely difficult. If she can try to recognize the cause and realize that she is not the reason for his actions can be very helpful to her. Because she will have a greater understanding for what is going on. If she can even learn to endure the abuse and not pass it on is the best thing she can do. To be kind, to him, when he is not being kind is the greatest gift she can give to him. Even when it seems he doesnt deserve it. It has been said, He who is most unloving, needs love the most! Most women lack this ability. They want to fight back and think Its not fair To think, Hes abusing me! I dont deserve this. Rather than being a safe haven for their man, they add to the pressure. They pay him back. They abuse in their own way. They yell back, argue or turn themselves off and quite talking to him. I am not saying women should be a door mate or accept any kind of abuse. But being able to withstand unkindness because someone is hurting inside and to not take it personal is the healthiest thing she can do for herself and for her mate. I have directed these suggestions to women but the same ideas are how men should treat their women. They should show the same kindness and understanding toward their wives. Also, I know there are many women out there trying to survive too. In our world many women are facing the same stresss as men. My thoughts can be used for both husband and wife. I offer my encouragement to you. I have discovered; after the trials come the blessings. I encourage you to give these thoughts a try. You may find that, one day, your husband or mate will say, thank you for sticking by me. Thank you for being there for me. You may also discover that your love has grown. By Christine Akiteng In Pt. 1 of this article I broke down the trait of kindness for you. The second most desired trait is intelligence. This is where it gets really, really interesting. When it comes to choosing mates for long term relationships we are smarter than we even know. We chose mates based on 8 types of intelligence, not just the one or two IQ tests measure. Here are those 8 types of intelligence: 1. Interpersonal Intelligence (People Smarts): the ability to understand other peoples intentions, motivations and desires. We are attracted to people smarts people because they relate well, have many friends and are cooperative. They are also sensitive to our feelings, fears, moods, temperament, motivations and intentions. They are genuinely empathic, and genuinely concerned about what is happening to us moment by moment. 2. Linguistic Intelligence (Word Smarts): the capacity to use language to express what’s on your mind. Human courtship is largely through the use of words and people who are good at thinking in words and using language to express and appreciate lifes beauty and complexes are very attractive because they excite, please, convince and stimulate us by the way they use words to convey information. 3. Musical Intelligence (Rhythm Smarts): the capacity to think and communicate using rhythm. This is what I like to call the Elvis Presley Phenomenon. Men and women with this trait have the unusual ability to make the rest of us feel what they feel, become one with them, and together with them. Their song becomes my/our song because we feel connected to them in a deeper and more primal way. We even want to take on their identity - amazing! And to think I always wanted to be Michael Jackson - before the plastic surgery! 4. Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence (Body Smarts): the capacity to use your whole body as intelligent communicator of ideas, emotions, desires etc. Were attracted to people with this trait because body smart people are body expressive, they have good timing, coordination and reflexes, they like physical contact and are very responsive, they have exceptional control of their bodies and as a result excellent in using their bodies in the bedroom - or where ever you prefer to do it.. 5. Mathematical Intelligence (Logic Smarts): the capacity to understand the relationship between cause and effect and manipulate numbers, quantities, and operations. We attracted to people with this intelligence because of their ability to think and reason deductively and inductively. They are usually organized good planners and most of us enjoy some level of certainty. They are also good at handling and managing money and financial investments. 6. Naturalist Intelligence (Jungle Smarts): sensitivity, respect and understanding of the delicate balance and deep relationship between the nature within and the nature outside (other creatures and features of the natural world). Although we’ve come along from the jungle days our Psychological brains are still programmed to be attracted to people who can effectively deal with their surroundings. People who are savvy about their environment make us feel safe and happy” because we know we can always count on them to introduce us to the mysteries and wonders (nice restaurant, discount store, important people and connections etc) and protect us from physical harm. 7. Intrapersonal Intelligence (Self Smarts): having an understanding of yourself; knowing who you are, what you can do, what you want to do, how you react to things, which things to avoid, and which things to gravitate toward. We are drawn to people who have a good understanding of themselves because they tend to know what they can and can’t do, and to know where to go if they need help. They can be relied on to take care of us when we can’t take care of ourselves. 8. Existential Intelligence ( Life Smarts ): the ability to be sensitive to, and have the capacity to pose and ponder larger questions such as the meaning of life, why are we born, why are some people evil, why do we die, what is consciousness, or how did we get here etc. We are attracted to people with this intelligence because they are fully aware and appreciative of the world we live in - its diversity, complexity, and wonder. And if we are open to it, they take us to places that our fearful minds are usually afraid to go. Come to think about it. It seems to me that were not that very different from our ancestors because survival selection still shapes how we chose a mate and who we find attractive. If youve been focusing your energies elsewhere like in pick-up lines, tricks and techniques, you are riding in the wrong banana boat. Why not just focus on developing the traits of kindness and intelligence and let survival selection take its course? My interest is in - how we can take advantage of this knowledge so that when a man or woman comes looking we will be chosen as the desired mate. How can we best position ourselves so that his or her survival instinct radar zooms on us- Zap! You are the one I want! I have a few ideas on my website on how this is possible.
